Prueba de Labortorio – Mezcla y Preparacion de CBR con PolyCom

PolyCom should only be mixed and processed using the following instrucion sheet.

Note 1: Soil characterisics of a tested raw material cannot be transported and applied to the sample mixed with
PolyCom. All characterisics must be redetermined as they will have changed.


Note 2: Sample CBR test result supplied - note reducion in OMC and increase in MDD for the PolyCom treated sample,
these changes in characterisics are typical. If you do not observe this trend you have done something wrong.


Note 3: It is advisable to lab test the PolyCom treated sample prior to tesing the raw material.

Lab mixing of PolyCom

On receiving a material to be stabilised with PolyCom - dry material thoroughly in a 50 degree oven and mix raw product to create a uniform sample. Ensure that you have enough material for compaction testing and CBR testing so that we have the required mass for each test. Generally you will require 30kg of material.

PolyCom mixing requires the following process - measure out 3g of Polycom and add it to 5 litres of water -
shake well and add 5 more litres of water. Leave this mix to stand for 2 hours. This mix is to be used as a
replacement to water for compaction tests and CBR tests.

The prepared raw material (30 Kg) and prepared PolyCom water is now ready to be used for compaction and
CBR tests. Add PolyCom water to an estimated 50% of the material OMC and mix in a cement mixer for 10 minutes. Split out 5 - 6kg for the CBR test and leave it bagged to one side unil the soil parameters are determined.

Split out five sub samples points for the compacion test (four point compaction test, keep fifth point as reserve to be used if need it ) and mix PolyCom water in increments to straddle the OMC ensuring to remix each sample after the liquid is added. Wait 10 minutes and mix again before compaction . Compact to 100% in the usual manner.

After the opimum characterisics have been determined the CBR sample can be mixed - mix the sample with
the required addiional amount of PolyCom water (remember you already have a measured amount of
PolyCom water incorporated in the sample) - construct mould to 100% MDD at the newly established OMC.
6.
CBR mould should be air cured (bench dried) for three days prior to soaking
